While animation for children audience often reaches for cute animals, adult filmmakers use animal characters in a slightly different way. Animals in these films usually take on disturbing content and strange, sometimes severely absurd situations. Sometimes they play the role of a mediator, through which the author reflects on a given topic - be it social networking issues, the woes of growing up or the loss of a loved one. At other times, the animals are the (anti-)heroes at the centre of the action, thrown into the whirlwind of life with which they must contend. Either way, these remarkable films always use the medium of animation in a creative way, and confidently move far beyond the possibilities of live action.
